My sincere regrets for this sudden request, things actually got out of control on my trip to Madrid, Spain. I was mugged, all my belongings including mobile phone and credit card were all stolen at gun point. I need your help flying back home.
The wording above was recently used as a “phishing” email attempt to gain access to the recipient’s personal information. “Phishing”, an identity theft methodology used by perpetrators to fish for information — Social Security number, credit or debit card number, or bank accounts — is a common scam that appears to originate from a friend with whom you regularly correspond, and the perpetrator is hoping you will respond emotionally, and with cash.
